لَعَمرُكَby your life لَمdid not تُبَقَّleave لَناfor us سُكوناًpeace
شُكاةٌan illness ماnot اِستَطَعتَyou could بِهاwith it حِراكاmovement
By your life, it left us no peace—
an illness that left you unable to stir.
رَماكَshot at you الدَهرُfate عَنby عَرضٍchance وَلَكِنand yet
أَصابَstruck حَشاthe heart المَكارِمَof nobility إِذwhen رَماكاshot at you
Fate shot at you at random, and yet
it struck the heart of nobility when it shot at you.
وَلَمّاand when أَنthat بَلاكَafflicted you بُليتُI was afflicted حُزناًwith grief
فَماso not يُدرىcan be distinguished بَلائيmy affliction مِنfrom بَلاكاyour affliction
And when it afflicted you, I was afflicted with grief;
so my affliction cannot be told from yours.
مُنيتُI was afflicted بِهاwith it فَماyet not أَشفَقتَyou were afraid مِنهاof it
وَأَشفَقَتِand was afraid العُلاglory مِماof what مَناكاafflicted you
I was stricken by it, yet you did not fear it,
while glory feared what had afflicted you.
صَبَرتَyou were patient لَهاwith it وَلَمand not تُخلَقyou were created جَزوعاًfainthearted
فَتَبكيso you would weep فيin الشَدائِدِhardships أَوor تَباكىyou feign tears
You bore it patiently; you were not made so fainthearted
as to weep in hardships or feign tears.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you إِنif أُذيتَyou are harmed بِكُلِّby every سوءٍill
فَلَيسَthen is not بِمُنقَضٍcoming to an end أَبَداًever أَذاكاyour hurt
And indeed, if you are harmed by every ill,
your hurt will never come to an end.
