أَستَشعِرُI feel اليَأسَdespair مِنَof الناسِpeople
فَالروحُfor relief وَالراحَةُand rest فيin اِلياسِdespair
I give up hope in people;
For relief and rest lie in despair.
قَدindeed صارَhas become لاno جَدوىbenefit لِآمالِناfor our hopes
كَأَنَّهاas though they were وُسواسُwhisperings خَنّاسِa slinking tempter
Our hopes now bring no benefit,
As though they were a slinking tempter's whispers.
قَدindeed صارَتِhas become الدُنياthe world وَأَحرارُهاand its noble people
لِغَيرِto those who are not أَحرارٍnoble وَأَكياسِand discerning
The world and its noble people have now passed
To those neither noble nor discerning.
صارَتhave become عَطاياgifts الناسِof people مَبذولَةًfreely bestowed
لِكُلِّto every رِجسٍvile person وَاِبنِand son of أَرجاسِvile people
People's gifts are now lavished
On every vile person and son of vile people.
إِنif تَطلُبَyou seek الأُنسَcompanionship فَفارِقهُمُthen leave them
إِلىto كِتابٍa book وَإِلىand to ياسِdespair
If you seek companionship, then leave them
For a book and for despair.
