سَوداءُ يَذرُفُ دُمعُها
مِثلَlike الأَتونِthe furnace إِذاwhen وَكَفit drips
مِثلَ الأَتونِ إِذا وَكَف
A black woman sheds her tears,
A black one whose tears flow
like a furnace when it drips;
like a furnace when it drips;
وَكَأَنَّهاand as though she مِنbecause of قُبحِهاher ugliness
وَكَأَنَّها مِن قُبحِها
سَلحُexcrement العَليلِof the sick man عَلىon الخَزَفearthenware
سَلحُ العَليلِ عَلى الخَزَف
and in her ugliness she seems
and, in her ugliness, she is like
a sick man’s excrement upon pottery.
