وَقَفتُI fixed عَلىupon يَحيىYahya رَجائيmy hope وَإِنَّماyet in truth
وَقَفتُI fixed عَلىupon صَوبِthe pouring rain الرَبيعِspring رَجائِياmy hope
I fixed my hope upon Yahya, yet in truth
I fixed my hope upon spring's pouring rain.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اللَياليthe nights أَدرَكَتattained ماwhat سَعَتthey strove لَهُfor it
I took as my mount جَدواهُhis bounty فَفُقتُand so I outstripped اللَيالِياthe nights
When the nights attain what they have striven for,
I take his bounty as my mount and outstrip the nights.
إِذاwhen غابَhe was absent جاءَcame المُزنُthe rain clouds فيin الجودِgenerosity سابِقاًleading
وَإِنand if آبَhe returned جاءَcame المُزنُthe rain clouds فيin الجودِgenerosity تالِياfollowing
When he is absent, the rain clouds lead in generosity;
And if he returns, the rain clouds follow in generosity.
إِذاif الغَيثُthe rain باراهُvied with him ثَنىturned back الغَيثُthe rain مُقصِراًfalling short
أَوِor البَرقُthe lightning جاراهُraced him ثَنىturned back البَرقُthe lightning كابِياfaltering
If rain vies with him, he turns the rain back, falling short;
Or if lightning races him, he turns the lightning back, faltering.
فَتىًa young man لَمdid not نَزِنهُwe adorn him بِالقَوافيwith rhymes وَإِنَّماbut rather
حَطَطناwe alighted إِلَيهِto him كَيso that يَزينَhe might adorn القَوافِياthe rhymes
A young man whom we have not adorned with rhymes; rather,
We alighted before him so that he might adorn the rhymes.
مِنَof الغُرِّthe illustrious لاحواthey shone أَشمُساًas suns وَمَضواand they advanced ظُبىًas sword-edges
وَصالواand they charged أُسوداًas lions وَاِستَهَلّواand they poured down سَوارِياas night-rain clouds
Of the illustrious, who shone as suns and advanced as sword-edges,
And charged as lions and poured down as clouds raining by night.
إِذاif مَعشَرٌa people فيin المَجدِglory كانواthey were هَوادِياleaders
فَقيسواthen they were compared بِهِwith him فيin المَجدِglory عادواthey became تَوالِياfollowers
If a people were leaders in glory,
Then, compared with him in glory, they became followers.

فَكُنso be باقِياًenduring حَتّىuntil تَرىyou see الدَهرَtime فانِياperishing
You have seen time's beauty renewed in you;
So endure until you see time perish.
