مَدَحتَyou praised وَلَمand not تَصدُقyou spoke truthfully وَلَمand not تَكُyou were مُذنِباًat fault
مَدَحتَ وَلَم تَصدُق وَلَم تَكُ مُذنِباً
وَلَكِنَّbut دَهراًan age لَمnot يُساعِدكَit favored you مُذنِبُat fault
وَلَكِنَّ دَهراً لَم يُساعِدكَ مُذنِبُ
You praised and did not speak the truth, yet you were not at fault.
You praised me yet didn't believe me
But the age that did not favor you is at fault.
And I wasn't guilty, but fate didn't assist a guilty one
وَماand not الجَهلُfolly إِلّاexcept أَنto تَقَرَّظَyou extol مَعشَراًa people
وَما الجَهلُ إِلّا أَن تَقَرَّظَ مَعشَراً
خَلائِقُهُمtheir qualities يَشهَدنَthey bear witness أَنَّكَthat you تَكذِبُyou are lying
خَلائِقُهُم يَشهَدنَ أَنَّكَ تَكذِبُ
And folly is nothing but extolling a people
Ignorance is nothing but taking sides with a group
whose qualities bear witness that you are lying.
Whose nature testifies you are lying
