أَتَدعونيdo you invite me وَتُطعِمُنيand feed me يَسيراًa little
وَتَسقينيand give me to drink الكَثيرَmuch عَلىon top of اليَسيرِthe little
Do you invite me, only to feed me a little,
Do you invite me and feed me a little,
and give me much to drink upon that little?
And give me much to drink on top of that little?
فَأَصبَحَso one came to be مِنكَbecause of you فيin يَومٍa day عَسيرٍhard
فَلاso not يَنفَكُّceases to be فيin يَومٍa day عَسيرِhard
So, because of you, I wake to a difficult day,
So, because of you, one ends up in a day of hardship,
and it does not let up throughout a difficult day.
And never escapes a day of hardship.
هُماthey both حَرّانِtwo burning heats مِنfrom جوعٍhunger وَسُكرٍand drunkenness
فَيالَكَso, what a ... you are! مِنof سَعيرٍa blaze فيwithin سَعيرِa blaze
Both are burning—from hunger and drunkenness.
They are two burning heats, from hunger and drunkenness;
What a blaze you are—a blaze within a blaze!
So, what a blaze within a blaze you are!
أَقولُI say وَفيand in غَضائِرِهِhis bowls عِظامٌbones

I say, with my bones in his earthen bowls:
I say, while bones lie in his bowls:
Are you ladling from cooking pots, or from graves?
Are you scooping from cooking pots or graves?
