Do you not see heaven's bough fresh and green?

You see in it cheerfulness and joy.

The clouds' gentle gifts have come to it in succession,

And the south wind has driven virgin clouds,

Spreading green carpets across the desert,

And bestowing yellow blossoms on the meadow,

    And narcissi, radiant as eyes,

And daisies, gleaming white like smiling mouths.

As though it were fashioning gold there,

As though it were blending perfume there,

As though it were scattering pearls there.

So ply the cups, white-streaked and golden,

Like water in color and perfume in fragrance.

Then bid the lute's treble string answer the piping.

    لا تُفسِدَنَّ بِالغَرامِ العُمرا

    And life is to give joy or be gladdened;

Never ruin your life with lovesick longing.
