قُلsay لِلمُدِلِّto the man who boasts بِلِحيَةٍof a beard مَوفورَةٍluxuriant
قُل لِلمُدِلِّ بِلِحيَةٍ مَوفورَةٍ
وَسَمادُand the manure لِحيَةِof the beard كُلِّof every أَلحىheavily bearded man جَهلُهُhis ignorance
وَسَمادُ لِحيَةِ كُلِّ أَلحى جَهلُهُ
Say to the man who boasts of a luxuriant beard—
Say to him with a beard overflowing
and every bearded man's ignorance is his beard's manure—
And the manure of every ignorant man is his ignorance
لاdo not يُعجِبَنَّكَimpress you طولُthe length بَندِكَof your banner إِنَّهُfor it is the case that
لا يُعجِبَنَّكَ طولُ بَندِكَ إِنَّهُ
مَنwhoever طالَgrew long لِحيَتُهُhis beard تَكَوسَجَbecame scantily bearded عَقلُهُhis mind
مَن طالَ لِحيَتُهُ تَكَوسَجَ عَقلُهُ
Do not admire your banner's length, for
Do not let the length of your turban impress you
when a man's beard grows long, his mind grows scant of beard.
He whose beard is long, his mind is short
