For every noble man beset by trials,
For every free man tried
living in wretched circumstances,
Who lives in constant woe—
وَالنَحسُand ill fortune فيin طالِعِهِhis ascendant
أَثبَتَfirmer مِنthan وَصلِthe fastening of وَتَدa peg
with ill fortune in his ascendant,
Ill fate his horoscope,
firmer than the fastening of a peg:
More fixed than nails or rope—
فَكُنso be رَقيعاًa shameless fool ساقِطاًbase
تَصدُرyou go out بِخَطٍّwith a written line وَتَرِدand come in
So be a shameless, base fool—
Be then a meteor, shot
you go out with a written line and come in.
To flash on high and drop;
وَكُنand be رَفيعاًexalted ماجِداًillustrious
وَاِصبِرand be patient عَلىwith ماwhat لَمdid not تُرِدyou desire
And be exalted and illustrious,
Yet nobly play your part,
and endure what you did not desire.
And patient bear your heart

No young man can ever enjoy
Alas! no youth can find
Saʿd’s good fortune without luck.
True bliss without the mind.
