دَفاتِرُ تُلقى في الظُروفِ وَتُرفَعُ
Of little use to an inexperienced ignoramus
The pages of books lie in envelopes to be mailed
Are volumes tossed into cases and put away.
Going and coming back to him in a waste
تَروحُgo in the evening وَتَغدوand go in the morning عِندَهُwith him فيin مَضيَعَةٍneglect
تَروحُ وَتَغدو عِندَهُ في مَضيَعَةٍ
وَكائِنand how many رَأَيناwe have seen مِنof نَفيسٍa precious thing يُضَيَّعُis wasted
وَكائِن رَأَينا مِن نَفيسٍ يُضَيَّعُ
They come and go in his keeping, neglected;
Rare is what we have seen being wasted
And how many precious things we have seen wasted!
You sing little about an ignorant flooded with darkness
