And a night with which I bought delight,

and in which I sold reason and faith.

There, union struck the heart of lovesickness,

and sorrow spent the night there a pauper.

And we had mingled with the east wind's breeze

the scent of wine and fragrant herbs.

And winecups are stars that, when

they shine in our hands, fall into us.

Our ewers laugh into the cup,

and their laughter makes us weep in equal measure.

As though their tops, when tipped,

were thickening barley gruel in the cup.
