إِذاwhen تَحَلّىhe adorned himself بِالعِذارِwith cheek-down وَمَشىand walked
إِذا تَحَلّى بِالعِذارِ وَمَشى
قُلتَyou would say فَتاةٌa maiden تَتَصَدّىpresents herself لِفَتىto a youth
قُلتَ فَتاةٌ تَتَصَدّى لِفَتى
When he adorned himself with down along his cheeks and walked,
When he is adorned with cheek-down and walks,
I said, “A maiden is vying with a youth!”
You would say: a maiden presenting herself to a youth.
كَأَنَّهُas though he were تَحتَbeneath الحِلِيِّthe jewels رَوضَةٌa garden
كَأَنَّهُ تَحتَ الحِلِيِّ رَوضَةٌ
دَرَّmilked عَلَيهاupon it الزَهرُthe blossoms أَخلافَthe teats of الحَياrain
دَرَّ عَلَيها الزَهرُ أَخلافَ الحَيا
As though beneath his ornaments he were a meadow
Beneath the jewels, he is like a garden
whose blossoms had milked the udders of the rain.
Upon which the blossoms have milked the teats of rain.
