أراكshowed you الهوىlove فيin لحظهاher glance لحظthe gaze of عاتبِone reproaching
When she bent her gazelle-like neck and turned away,
When the gazelle tilted her neck and turned away
Love showed you in her glance a look of reproach.
I saw reproach in your glance in that moment
فلمso not أدرI knew ماwhat العتبىamends ولاnor كنتwas I مذنباًguilty
سوىexcept أننيthat I مستشعرٌwearing against the skin ثوبthe robe of تائبِa penitent
So I knew not what amends to make, nor was I guilty,
Yet I knew not what the reproach was, nor was I guilty
Save that I wore a penitent's robe against my skin.
Except that I was feeling the garment of a penitent
وماand never لحظتكglanced at you العينthe eye منيof mine بنظرةwith a glance
فتقلعthen it desists إلّاexcept عنfrom دموعtears سواكبِstreaming
And never has this eye of mine glanced at you
And your eyes glanced at me not with a look
And then turned away without tears streaming.
That drew away without tears like falling stars
وإنيand indeed I لأستدعيdo summon بكthrough you الحزنsorrow والبكاand weeping
إذاwhen غاضdried up دمعيmy tears عندin the face of بعضsome المصائبِcalamities
And through you I do summon sorrow and weeping
Truly I summon grief and weeping through you
When my tears run dry in the face of certain calamities.
When my tears overflow at some misfortunes
