إذا ما شئتَ أن تحظى

إذا ما شئتَ أن تحظى

وأن تلبسَ فوهِيّا

وأن تلبسَ فوهِيّا

If ever you wish to win favor,

If you wish to prosper

and to wear fūhī cloth,

And to don the robe of glory,

وأن تصبحَ ذا مالٍ

وأن تصبحَ ذا مالٍ

فكن عِلجاً نَبيطِيّا

فكن عِلجاً نَبيطِيّا

and to become a man of wealth,

And to gain abundant wealth,

then be a Nabataean boor.

Be then a prudent healer.

وإن سَرَّك أن تشقى

وإن سَرَّك أن تشقى

وأن تُصبِحَ مَقلِيّا

وأن تُصبِحَ مَقلِيّا

And if it pleases you to be wretched,

But if it pleases you to suffer

and to become despised,

And to live in misery,

فكن ذا نَسَبٍ ضَخمٍ

فكن ذا نَسَبٍ ضَخمٍ

وكُن مَع ذاك نحويّا

وكُن مَع ذاك نحويّا

then be a man of illustrious lineage,

Be then of noble lineage

and, along with that, be a grammarian.
