أرى الدهر يجفوني ونفسي عزيزة

وليس معي زهد فاسطو على دهري

I see Fate shunning me, though my soul is proud;

I see fate spurning me, while my soul is proud.

Nor have I ascetic detachment, with which to defy my fate.

Nor have I the ascetic detachment to defy my fate.

وقالوا وراء النهر للرزق مطلبٌ

وقالوا وراء النهر للرزق مطلبٌ

فقلتُ وراء السدِّ خير من الفقر

فقلتُ وراء السدِّ خير من الفقر

They said, “Beyond the river, a livelihood may be sought.”

And they said, "Beyond the river is a place to seek sustenance."

I said, “Beyond the Barrier is better than poverty.”

So I said, "Beyond the barrier is better than poverty."
