دخلتُ السوقَ ابتاعُ

دخلتُ السوقَ ابتاعُ

واستطرفُ ما أُهدي

واستطرفُ ما أُهدي

I entered the market to buy,

I entered the market to buy

And select novelties to give;

And to look for gifts to bestow

فما استطرقتُ للأهدا

فما استطرقتُ للأهدا

ء إلّا طُرَفَ الحمد

ء إلّا طُرَفَ الحمد

So, for gift-giving, I sought

But I looked for gifts to bestow

Only choice treasures of praise.

Only to offer praise

إذا نحنُ مدحناكَ

إذا نحنُ مدحناكَ

قضينا حُرمةَ المجد

قضينا حُرمةَ المجد

When we praise you,

For if we praise you

We pay glory its due;

We fulfill the sacred duty

ونَشرُ المدح في مث

ونَشرُ المدح في مث

لِكَ أذكى من ثنا الند

لِكَ أذكى من ثنا الند

And the fragrance of praise for one

And to spread praise for one like you

Like you is more fragrant than the scent of incense.

Is wiser than rejecting generosity
