تعيرينyou reproach عرييmy nakedness رجالٌmen سفاهةٌfoolishness
تعيرين عريي رجالٌ سفاهةٌ
فعَزَّيتُso I consoled نفسيmyself مصدِراًgoing forth ومُوَرِّداand coming in
فعَزَّيتُ نفسي مصدِراً ومُوَرِّدا
You foolish men taunt me for my nakedness;
so I consoled myself, in my going and coming,
بأنّيwith the thought that I am كمثلlike السيفthe sword أحسنُmost beautiful ماwhat يُرىis seen
بأنّي كمثل السيف أحسنُ ما يُرى
وأهيبُand most awe-inspiring ماwhat يُلقىis encountered إذاwhen هُوَit جُرَّداis unsheathed
وأهيبُ ما يُلقى إذا هُوَ جُرَّدا
with the thought that I am like a sword, most beautiful to behold,
and most awe-inspiring to encounter when it is unsheathed.
