تعجبت دُرُّ من شيبي فقلت لها
لاdo not تعجبيmarvel فطلوعfor the rising of البدرِthe full moon فيin السُدَفِthe darkness
لا تعجبي فطلوع البدرِ في السُدَفِ
Durr marveled at my gray hair, so I said to her:
The pearl was amazed at my old age, so I said to it,
“Do not marvel, for the full moon rises in darkness.”
"Do not be amazed - the rising of the moon in its burka.
وراعهاand it startled her عجباًwith wonder أنthat رُحتُI went about فيin سَمَلٍa threadbare garment
وراعها عجباً أن رُحتُ في سَمَلٍ
وماand not دَرَتshe knew دُرُّDurr أنَّthat الدرَّthe pearls فيin الصَدَفِthe shells
وما دَرَت دُرُّ أنَّ الدرَّ في الصَدَفِ
And she was struck with wonder that I went about in a threadbare garment,
It astonished the one who tended to it that I grew gray hair
Yet Durr did not know that pearls are in shells.
While the pearl did not realize that pearls come from oysters."
