أوسعتُI lavished عمراًupon Amr ثنائيmy praise حينwhen أوسعنيhe lavished upon me
بِرَّkindness اللِسانof the tongue ووشكَand swiftness الصَرفِof dismissal إذwhen صرَفاhe dismissed
I lavished my praise on Amr when he lavished on me
kind words and swift dismissal when he sent me away.
حسبتُI counted باقيَthe remainder زاديof my provisions منamong مواهبهhis gifts
وقُمتُand I rose أعقِدُI tie حبلthe rope الرَحلِof the saddle منصرفاdeparting
I counted what remained of my provisions among his gifts,
and rose to tie the saddle rope, departing.
فأُبتُso I returned منهfrom him إلىto أهليmy family وبيand in me رَمَقٌa remnant of life
لاno مَطلَstalling عانيتُI suffered منهfrom him لاno ولاand no خُلُفاbroken promise
So I returned from him to my family, with a little life left in me;
I suffered no stalling from him—no, nor any broken promise.
