لعمري لئن بَيَّعتُ في دار غُربتي

By my life, if in the land of my exile there should be sold
By my life, if I have sold off in the land of my exile
my clothes, when provisions grow scarce for me,
my clothes because food grew scarce for me,
فماthen … not أناI إلاexcept السيفthe sword أخلَقhas worn out جَفنُهُits scabbard
فما أنا إلا السيف أخلَق جَفنُهُ

I am but a sword whose scabbard has worn away:
then I am but a sword whose scabbard has worn out:
its ornament comes from itself, though it stands bare.
its adornment comes from itself, though it bears no ornaments.
