إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) شَرِبتُI drank الراحَthe wine ياO صاحِfriend فاتَنيeluded me
إِذا ما شَرِبتُ الراحَ يا صاحِ فاتَني
لأَرشِفَso that I may sip مِنfrom ذاكَthat الرُضابِsaliva بَقاياهاits remnants
لأَرشِفَ مِن ذاكَ الرُضابِ بَقاياها
Whenever I drink wine, my friend, it eludes me [wording unclear in the Arabic],
When I drink the wine, my friend, do not reprove,
so that I may sip its remnants from that saliva.
Though from the dregs I drain what may remain.
فَإِنso if فاتَنيeluded me رَشفُsipping المُدامِthe wine فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I
فَإِن فاتَني رَشفُ المُدامِ فَإِنَّني
سأقنَعُI shall be content مِنهاfrom it بِانتِشاقِيَwith my inhaling رَيّاهاits fragrance
سأقنَعُ مِنها بِانتِشاقِيَ رَيّاها
So if sipping the wine eludes me, then I
And if the draft I miss, yet well content
shall be content to inhale its fragrance.
Am I with scent alone that it contains.
