My heart in pieces torn asunder lies,
as though it had been filled with a burning ember?
As if with fiery embers 'twere filled inside,

My patience sweet, no more their weight can abide.

حينَduring سُقميmy illness تَدورُshe moved about بِيaround me وَتُداريand tended gently
I had hoped that she would live and remain,
I hoped she would linger and remain,
tending and soothing me when I was ill.
When I was ill, she would tend and advise,
لَمnot تَكُنshe was زَوجَةًa wife وَلَكنbut كَأُمٍlike a mother

She was not a wife, but like a mother,
No mere wife was she, but like a mother,
and I was like her son, the littlest of children.
While I was as her child, so small in size,
كانَتshe was الروحَthe soul بَينَbetween جَنبيَّmy two sides راحَتshe departed

She was the soul between my sides; she departed,
My soul found rest tucked 'tween her sides,
and my life became like a borrowed garment.
And my life like a borrowed robe comprised,
دَعَتshe implored اللَهَGod أَنthat تَموتَshe might die سَريعاًsoon

She prayed to God that she might die soon,
She prayed to God for a swift death soon,
in my lifetime, in dignity and sheltered privacy.
While I enjoyed glory, grace and disguise,

So God answered her prayer,
So the Lord answered her prayerful wish,
and she met her end, passing to the eternal abode.
And she met her death, to the home of allies,

May God water her grave without harm,
May God water her grave without ceasing,
and favor her with steady, abundant rain.
And grace it with goodness that never dries.
