لأَكلُindeed, eating الشَعيرِbarley وَاقتناءُand acquiring المَعارِفِknowledge
لأَكلُ الشَعيرِ وَاقتناءُ المَعارِفِ
أَلذُّsweeter مِنthan السَلوىquail وَلِبسِand wearing المَطارِفِfine cloaks
أَلذُّ مِن السَلوى وَلِبسِ المَطارِفِ
Truly, eating barley and acquiring knowledge
Eating barley and acquiring knowledge
Are sweeter than quail and wearing fine cloaks.
Is sweeter than desserts and fine garments.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لمُستغنِam indeed self-sufficient بعلمٍthrough knowledge جَمَعتُهُI have gathered it
وَإِنّي لمُستغنِ بعلمٍ جَمَعتُهُ
وَهَيهاتَand far from it ماnot يُغنيsuffices تَليديmy inherited wealth وَطارِفيand my newly acquired wealth
وَهَيهاتَ ما يُغني تَليدي وَطارِفي
And I am indeed self-sufficient through knowledge I have gathered;
And I am self-sufficient with the knowledge I have amassed,
Yet my inherited and newly acquired wealth is far from sufficient.
While my inherited fortune and finery are of no avail.
