They said: You came from the Sacred House and from

visiting the Chosen One, freely choosing to return.

So people visited you in groups, while some of them

scorned you and, out of conceit, did not visit.

None has scorned you but an ignorant fool possessed of envy,

who sees in you the sun, scorching and shining.

Had you been a filthy wretch among the converts,

arriving from Jerusalem, the fool would have been a frequent visitor.

If they are left aside, visits were paid long ago by the greatest among them

in rank, and the richest in contributions to sacred law:

the Maliki and the Hanafi, who both

in their age were the most exalted of men in standing,

followers of the two imams who are

the foundation of sacred law in transmitted teaching and reasoned inquiry:

al-Asbahi and Nu‘man—may they never cease

to have the All-Merciful water their tombs abundantly.
