حَكىresembled منthe one whom أحبI love المسكَmusk لَوناًin color وَنَفحةًand fragrance
حَكى من أحب المسكَ لَوناً وَنَفحةً
لِذَلكfor that reason أَضحىbecame وَهوَwhile it فيناamong us مُشَرَّفُhonored
لِذَلك أَضحى وَهوَ فينا مُشَرَّفُ
The one I love mirrored musk in hue and fragrance;
The one I love resembled musk in color and fragrance.
and so musk has come to be honored among us.
Thus it came to be honored among us.
وَقَدand indeed لَبِسَتshe donned بُرداًa mantle سَوادَthe blackness of قُلوبِناour hearts
وَقَد لَبِسَت بُرداً سَوادَ قُلوبِنا
أَلَمhave you not تَرَهاseen them أَضحَتthey have become عَلَيهاover her تُرَفرِفُfluttering
أَلَم تَرَها أَضحَت عَلَيها تُرَفرِفُ
She has donned as a mantle the blackness of our hearts—
She has donned the blackness of our hearts as a mantle.
do you not see them fluttering over her?
Have you not seen them now fluttering over her?
وَمالَتand inclined إِلَيهاtoward her العَينُthe eye إِذfor هِيَit شِبههاher likeness
وَمالَت إِلَيها العَينُ إِذ هِيَ شِبهها
فَلَيسَso there is no لَهاfor it عَنهاaway from her مَدىthroughout الدَهرِall time مَصرِفُway to turn
فَلَيسَ لَها عَنها مَدى الدَهرِ مَصرِفُ
The eye was drawn to her, since it is her likeness;
And the eye inclined toward her, for it is her likeness.
and so, for all time, it can never turn away from her.
Thus, through all time, it has no way to turn from her.
