ماnot ضَرَّharmed حُسنُthe beauty الَّذيthe one whom أَهواهI love him أَنَّthat سَنىthe radiance
كَريمتيهhis two precious eyes بِلاwithout شَينٍblemish قَدindeed اِحتَجباhas been veiled
The beauty of the one I love is unharmed, though the radiance
What harm that the beauty I loved has gone away
Of his two precious eyes has been veiled, without blemish.
My two noble companions have hidden themselves
قَدindeed كانَتاthey both were زَهرَتَيtwo flowers of رَوضa garden وَقَدand indeed ذَوتاthey both withered
لَكنَّbut حُسنَهماtheir beauty الفَتّانenchanting ماnot ذَهباhas gone
They were two garden flowers, and they have withered,
They were two blossoms of a garden, now they are gone
But their enchanting beauty has not gone—
But their enchanting beauty remains undiminished
كَالسَيفِlike a sword قَدindeed زالَvanished عَنهُfrom it صَقلهits polish فَغَداso it became
أَنكىmore wounding وَآلمَand more painful فيin قَلبِthe heart of الَّذيthe one whom ضَرباit struck
Like a sword whose polish has vanished and which has become
Like a sword whose polish is gone yet it cuts deeper
More wounding and more painful to the heart of the one it struck.
And strikes with more pain the heart it once gladdened
