وَقَد تَزيّنَ مِنها خَدُّها بِالخال
She appeared to us, an anklet on her leg.
An anklet appeared on her leg and on his
And her cheek was adorned with a beauty mark.
And her cheek was adorned by a mole
لَماwhen ظَفِرتُI gained possession بِهاof her فيin مَنزلٍa dwelling ليof mine خالempty

قُلتُ اِرحَمي مُدنَفاً قالَت نَعَم يا خال
When I won her in an empty dwelling of mine,
When I found her in a house of mine empty
I said, “Have mercy on a lovesick man.” She said, “Yes, uncle.”
I said, “have mercy on one fallen,” she said “yes, uncle”

بَدراً بَدا وَنَضَت عَنها بُرودَ الخال
And she unveiled a face that whoever saw it took
And she revealed a cheek that stunned all who saw
for a full moon appearing; she shed her cloaks of Yemeni cloth.
A full moon appeared and the coolness of cheek faded

وَلاand do not تَسَلask ماwhat جَرىhappened مِنfrom ناهدٍa full-breasted maiden مبخالwithholding her favors
وَلا تَسَل ما جَرى مِن ناهدٍ مبخال
As though she were a bough in the meadow of Dhu Khal.
As if she were a branch in the garden with ripening dates
And do not ask what passed with a full-breasted maiden so sparing of her favors.
And don’t ask what happened with an ungenerous Nahid
