Over a calamity like this, eyes weep themselves dry,

and crushing, devastating sorrows are amassed.

The fruits of despair are plucked from death's spreading tree,

and ribs are bent over enduring anguish.

A calamity has befallen us; no calamity is its equal:

a parting with no return, and memories recurring.

Buildings stand deserted that once were filled with learning

and remembrance and the Quran; now they are desolate wastes.

    فَكامِلُهُ فَيضٌ عَلى الخَلقِ شائِعُ

    We lost one—had reason taken form, it would have been her;

for its perfect form is an outpouring spread throughout creation.

Thus only one of piercing mind and sound judgment was seen,

patient under affliction, humble before God.

A maiden who became the sun's sister, yet she had not been,

because of the seclusion that nature required.

Living in comfort, waited upon, surrounded on every side,

and everyone, without fail, obeyed whenever she commanded.

Beauty hovers over her, dewy with freshness,

as a flourishing bough grows dewy in a leafy grove.

Keeping to her curtained chamber, she recites her Quran,

with an understanding heart, while her eye streams with tears.

Her radiance appears through the openings of her curtained chambers,

as the full moon's light appears, its radiance shining.

She knew no misery, nor was she deprived of wealth,

nor did any terror of time ever frighten her.

Sometimes she plays with gold, and sometimes

with fresh pearls no craftsman has pierced.

She never set her hand to any work,

save a pen around which her fingers bend.

With it she writes the Quran and the traditions that

came from God's Messenger, her handwriting exquisite.

She grew up amid piety and a copy of the Quran,

so remembrance was unbroken, and faith was not neglected.

Her concern was not with what women regard:

clothing, adornment, and a lover who shares her bed.

Rather, her concern was earning a reward she laid up

for the Day of Return, or a book she would study.

She studies Quranic commentary and refined grammar,

and reviews jurisprudence, history, and medicine.

She intended to complete the pillars of her faith

through pilgrimage to God's House—a beneficial resolve.

So she made the pilgrimage and visited the best who ever trod the earth:

a noble Prophet, interceding for the people of the sanctuary.

When the All-Merciful decreed that His judgment be carried out—

and whatever is ordained will surely come to pass—

she died in the prime of youth, a martyr,

and was not among those who struggle in death's throes.

Rather, with a steadfast mind she pronounced the testimony of faith

three times, and passed away while repeating it.

She did not die until she had seen her resting place

in the world above, while her soul ascended.

The day of her death was a momentous day for her:

women wailed and tunics were torn.

She had instructed that there be no wailing when she died,

but the listening ears did not heed that charge.

The people's notables walked before her at noon,

and prayed over her, supplication following supplication.

They walked before the bier until they brought her

to her abode—the grave, most hideous and spacious.

When they turned the earth with spades, there appeared to them

soil like wars-dye, a brilliant yellow.

The fragrance of musk wafted from its sides,

as though merchants of perfume caravans had laid their wares there.

O soil in whose depths Nudar has settled,

may the foremost rainclouds, pouring down, water you.
