أَياO مانِحيyou who give me الحَلواءَsweets جُوداًgenerously وَمانِعيand you who withhold from me
عَلىout of بُخلٍstinginess أَحلىsweeter وَأَشهىand more delectable مِنthan الحَلوىsweets
O you who generously give me sweets, yet withhold from me
O you who generously give sweetness and deny
Out of stinginess, what is sweeter and more delectable than sweets:
With a stinginess sweeter and more delicious than sweetness.
رُضابٌsaliva; nectar of the lips حَكَتهُimitated it الراحُwine طَعماًin taste وَنكهَةًand in fragrance
وَإِنand though لَمhas not تَذُقهُtasted it الروحُthe soul راحَتbecame بِهِthrough it نَشوىintoxicated
The nectar of lips, which wine has imitated in taste and fragrance.
Winds have spun its taste into flavor and relish-
And though the soul has not tasted it, it has grown drunk on it.
And even if the soul doesn't taste it, it is delighted by its aroma.
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَلَوand if ذاقَتهُtasted it دامَwould last اِنتِشاؤُهاits intoxication
إِلىuntil الأَجَلِthe hour of death المَحتومِinevitable لاnot تَبتَغيseeks صَحواsobriety
And I [say]: were it to taste it, its intoxication would last
And truly, even if it did taste it, its exhilaration would last
Until the inevitable hour of death, seeking no sobriety.
Until the appointed time of death- it seeks no sobriety.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was أَسلوI find solace لَوif يَمُنُّhe bestows بِرَشفَةٍwith a sip
فَلاso not هُوَhe ذُوpossessing مَنٍّgenerosity وَلاnor أَناI ذُوpossessing سَلوىsolace
And I would have found solace, had he granted a sip;
I used to ask, if only it would allow a sip-
But he grants no favor, nor do I find solace.
But neither it is one to give, nor I one to ask.
