وَأَسهَرت ناظِراً قَد طالَما نَعَسا
O separation, you have replaced my joy with sorrow,
O company that turned my joy to sorrow
And kept awake an eye that had so often dozed.
And made me stay up watching, though often sleepy,
أَنّىhow يَكونُcan there be اِجتِماعٌreunion بَينَbetween مُفترِقٍwhat is parted

How can there be reunion between what is parted—
How can there be a meeting between those parted?
A body in Egypt and a soul that has settled in al-Andalus?
A body in Egypt, a soul gone to Andalusia.
