أَمالِكO master مُهجَتيmy soul كَمhow much ذاthis تُواليyou bestow successively
عَوارِفَfavors قَدindeed أَتينَthey have come عَلىin التَواليsuccession
O master of my soul, how you keep bestowing
My friend, how long will you continue
favors that have come one after another!
Bestowing favors upon me continuously?
بَقِيتُI continued أَغُضُّI lower مِنof طَرفيmy gaze حَياءًout of bashfulness
لَماfor what اسدَيتَyou bestowed مِنof كَرَمِgenerosity الخِلالِcharacter traits
I have kept lowering my gaze in bashfulness
I lower my eyes in shyness
at the generosity of character you have shown.
For the generosity you have shown.
لَقَدindeed شرَّفتَyou honored بِالتَقريظِwith commendation وَضعيmy work
وَقَدand indeed شنَّفتَyou adorned سَمعيmy hearing بِاللآليwith pearls
Indeed, you have honored my work with your commendation,
You have honored me with your praise
and you have adorned my hearing with pearls.
And delighted my hearing with your melodies.
فَماso not أَبقيتَyou left مِنof مَعنىًa meaning غَريبٍrare
توشِّيهِyou adorn it بِلَفظٍwith wording مِنكَfrom you حاليelegant
So you have left no rare meaning
You have left no strange meaning
to adorn with elegant words of your own.
Without adorning it with a word of my state.
تُرىI wonder عشقتكَhave loved you أَبكارُvirgins المَعانيthe meanings
فَجئنكَso they came to you يَبتدِرنَthey hasten بِلاwithout سُؤالِa request
I wonder, have the virgin meanings fallen in love with you,
It seems the essences of meanings have fallen in love with you
and come rushing to you unbidden?
And come to you without asking.
جَديرٌfitting أَنthat يَزُرنَكthey visit you رافِلاتٍtrailing their robes
عَرائِسُbrides قَدindeed بَرَزنَthey emerged مِنfrom الحِجالِthe bridal chambers
It is fitting that they visit you, trailing their robes—
It is fitting that convoys of maidens
brides who have emerged from their curtained chambers—
Who have emerged from seclusion visit you.
لِتَكسوهاso you may clothe them محاسِنَbeauties مِنfrom عُلاكُمyour eminence
وَتَمنَحناand you grant us المَفاخرَglories وَالمَعاليand high honors
that you may clothe them in beauties drawn from your eminence,
To adorn them with the beauties of your excellence
and grant us glories and high honors.
And grant us pride and loftiness.
حَبيبَbeloved القَلبِthe heart وُدّيmy affection مِنfrom قَديمٍlong ago
صَحيحٌsteadfast لاnot تُغيِّرُهُalter it اللَياليthe nights
Beloved of my heart, my long-standing affection
Beloved of my heart, my love for you is old,
is steadfast; the nights do not change it.
The nights cannot change it.
وَلَيليand my night مَعwith نَهاريmy day فيin سُهادٍsleeplessness
فَلَيسَso does not النَومsleep يَخطرُcross ليto me بِباليin my mind
And my night and day are spent in sleeplessness,
My night and my day are in passion,
so sleep does not cross my mind.
Sleep does not occur to me.
وَصورَتُكand your image الجَميلةُbeautiful نُصبَbefore عَينيmy eyes
فَلَستُso I am not بِطالِبٍseeking زَورَa visit الخَيالِthe phantom
And your beautiful image is before my eyes,
Your beautiful image is before my eyes,
so I do not seek the phantom’s visit.
I am not one who seeks false fantasies.
لَقَدindeed أَلغَزتُI posed a riddle فيin نَظميmy verse بِسرٍّwith a secret
تحارُare bewildered بِفَكِّهِby deciphering it فُصحَeloquent ones الرِجالِamong men
Indeed, I have set a secret riddle in my verse,
I have composed mysteries in my verse
whose unraveling bewilders eloquent men.
That the eloquent struggle to unravel.
وَمبتدَئيand my subject لَهُit has خبرٌa predicate غَريبٌunusual
وَمنفصلٌand something detached شَبيهٌsimilar بِاتِصالِto connection
And my subject has an unusual predicate,
My beginning has a strange report
and what is detached resembles what is joined.
And my end is akin to my start.
