I never knew that our camels
could bear gazelles with heavy haunches,
Give birth to gazelles with heavy haunches,

until I saw al-Hajīn’s son, light of build—
Until I saw the half-breed's light-footed son,
a gazelle swaying gracefully, bearing camel’s padded feet:
A gazelle, swaying gracefully, bearing padded hooves.

a fawn endowed with every beauty, who came
A fawn who possessed every charm, and so came to
to strut in youth’s ample-flowing robe,
Strut in youth's ample mantle,

Like the full moon in its darkness, and a bough in
its lush vigor, and pearls within their shells;
Its flourishing prime, and pearls within shells.

Breathing musk, smiling
to reveal translucent pearls radiant with splendor.
To reveal pearls, gleaming and translucent.

A gazelle begotten of a hybrid—a marvel;
A gazelle born of a half-breed—a lesson:
a delicate human from a coarse source.
A delicate human from a coarse abode.
لاno غروَwonder فيin متولِّدٍone born مِنfrom صنفِهِhis kind
إِنَّindeed الغَريبَthe strange thing تَخالُفُthe disparity of الأَصنافِthe kinds
There is no wonder in one begotten of his own kind;
There is no wonder in one born of his own kind;
the wonder lies in the divergence of species.
Indeed, what is strange is the disparity of kinds.

هَذيthis الطَبيعةُnature قَدindeed أَتَتcame بِمُنافِwith a contrary result
He lies who claimed that Nature brought this about;
He lied who claimed that nature had an effect;
this very nature has produced a contradiction.
This nature has brought forth a contrary result.

فيin خَلقِهِHis creation بِتَوافُقٍwith correspondence وَخلافِand difference
It is the Creator’s power: He does whatever He wills
It is the Creator's power: He does what He wills
in His creation, through concord and contrast.
In His creation, through likeness and difference.

This proves that the Fashioner acts
It has shown that the Maker acts
by free choice, and is the Giver of graces.
By choice, and is the giver of gracious favors.
