بَعدَماafter حَلَّتcame to rest نُضارٌNuḍār فيin الثَرىthe earth
My soul has turned away from these mortals,
My soul turned away from this abode,
after Nuḍār came to rest in the earth.
After decay settled into the soil.
فَبِسَمعِيso in my hearing صَمَمٌdeafness إِنif حُدِّثُواthey are spoken to
وَبِعَينيand in my eyes نَبوَةٌaversion أَنto تَنظُراlook (both eyes)
So my hearing is deaf if they are spoken to,
My hearing is deaf if they speak,
and my eyes shrink from looking.
And my sight is blind if it looks.
كَيفَhow لِيfor me عَقلٌa mind بِأَنto أَصحَبَهُمI keep their company
لاnot أَرىI see وَجهَthe face of نُضارNuḍār النَّيِراradiant
How can I be of a mind to keep their company,
How can I keep company with them
when I do not see Nuḍār's radiant face?
When I see no face with freshness aglow?
لاno وَلاnor أَسمَعُI hear مِنof أَلفاظِهاher words

كُلماwhenever قَدindeed أَبرَزَتهاshe brought them forth دُرَراpearls
No, nor do I hear her words—
Nor do I hear from their words
pearls whenever she brought them forth.
The pearls their utterances once shed.
لَوif نُظِمنَthey were strung together كُنَّthey would be زُهرَbright أَنجُمٍstars
أَوor نُثِرنَthey were scattered كُنَّthey would be زَهراًblossoms أَنوَراradiant
If strung together, they would be shining stars;
Were they strung they'd be a starry wreath,
or, if scattered, they would be radiant blossoms.
Or scattered they'd be the brightest flowers.

Though she has been veiled from my sight,
If from my eyes she is veiled,
yet her form has been pictured in my heart.
In my heart her image is pictured still.

I have kept close to the soil where she came to rest;
I've clung to the soil where she once dwelled,
it became fragrant with perfume and strong-scented musk.
Exuding a fragrance of sweet musk.

There rest the learning and excellence that
There knowledge and merit once thrived,
had become renowned through her among the eminent.
Renowned on faces that beamed their light.

هَلdoes يُوازيequal الصَخرُstone يَوماًever جَوهَراa jewel
No woman matched her excellence;
No female matched her excellence,
does stone ever equal a jewel?
Can rock ever equal a jewel some day?

She recited the Qur'an, fresh and correctly inflected;
She recited the Quran purely pristine,
no misreading or grammatical slip marred it.
No error or accent impure.

And with ink she embroidered her writing sheet
And wrote with the ink in her scroll
with the tracery of script displayed in lines,
Lines whose script shone clear.

With the Prophet's words, jurisprudence and grammar,
