حَفِظَmay preserve اللَهُGod ساعَةًan hour مَزَجَتنيmingled me
بِحَبيبيwith my beloved فَنَحنُso we مَزجاًblended together كَشُهدِlike honeycomb
May God preserve the hour that mingled me
May God preserve the hour that joined me
with my beloved; blended together, we are like honeycomb.
With my beloved, for we were united like honey,
وَلَحاand may curse اللَهُGod ساعَةًan hour فَرَّقَتناparted us
وَحَشَتand crammed فيin حَشايَmy innermost being أَعظَمَthe greatest وَقدِblaze
And may God curse the hour that parted us
Yet, may God damn the hour that parted us -
and filled my innermost being with the fiercest blaze.
It left within my entrails a mighty fire.
صِرتُI became كَالشَمعِlike wax مُحرِقاًburning ذاpossessing اصفرارyellowness
وَهوَand he كَالأَريِlike honey لَوif only يُباحُwere permitted لِوردِfor drinking
I became like wax, burning and yellow,
I've become like a candle, burning, turning yellow,
while he is like honey—if only a draught were permitted.
While he is like a myrtle, if embracing roses were allowed.
