تَذكَرتُI recalled تَقبيلاًkissing لأَنمُلto the fingertips راحَةٍa palm
بِراحَتِهاthrough its comfort جُرحُthe wound النَوائبِof calamities قَدmay يُوسىbe healed
I remembered kissing the fingertips of a palm
I recalled kissing the fingertips of a palm,
whose soothing touch may heal the wound of calamities.
through whose comfort the wound of calamities may be healed.
فَأَرسَلتُso I sent طُرسِيmy page نائِباًas a deputy عَنfor فَميmy mouth لَهاto it (the palm)
فَياand oh حُسنَهُits beauty طُرساًas a page بِهاby it (the palm) صارَbecame مَلموساtouched
So I sent my letter to her as a deputy for my mouth—
So I sent my page to it as a deputy for my mouth;
how lovely it is: a letter made tangible by her touch!
how lovely it was—a page now touched by that hand!
أَناملُfingertips لَمnot تُخلَقwere created لِغَيرِfor anything other than مَكارِمٍnoble deeds

Fingers created for nothing but noble deeds:
Fingertips created for nothing but noble deeds:
how much blessing they have brought, how much misery dispelled!
how many blessings they brought, and how much misery they banished!
مَتىwhen تَسمحُwill allow الأَيامُthe days بِالرِحلةِfor the journey الَّتيthat

When will the days permit the journey that
When will the days permit the journey that
will show me a dwelling made welcoming by noble virtues,
shows me a dwelling enlivened by noble deeds,
وَتَشهدُand witnesses قُطباًan axis لِلسيادَةِof lordship دائراًrevolving
بِهِaround him فلكُthe sphere العَلياءِof eminence بالسَعدِby good fortune مَحروساguarded
and behold an axis of sovereignty, around whom
and lets me behold an axis of lordship, encircled
the firmament of glory revolves, guarded by good fortune?
by the sphere of eminence, guarded by good fortune?

A generous man—whenever the estranging distances fling
A generous man: whenever distant exile casts
a seeker toward him, the seeker becomes immersed in bounty.
a supplicant to him, that supplicant is steeped in bounty.
إِذاwhen اِسوَدَّتturned black الأَيديthe hands لِبُخلٍfrom miserliness يُشينُهاdisgraces them
فَكمthen, how many مِنof يَدٍa hand بَيضاءَwhite جادَgave generously بِهاwith it مُوسىMusa
When hands are blackened by a stinginess that disgraces them,
When hands are blackened by miserliness that disgraces them,
how many a shining hand has Moses generously bestowed!
then how many a white hand Musa has generously bestowed!
