I recalled kissing the fingertips of a hand

Through whose comfort the wound of calamities may be healed.

So I sent my page to it, a proxy for my mouth.

And how lovely a page it was, now touched by that hand!

Fingertips created for nothing but noble deeds:

How much bliss they have brought, and how much misery dispelled!

When will the days permit the journey that

Shows me a dwelling made welcoming by noble deeds,

And lets me behold a pole of lordship, around whom

The sphere of glory turns, while good fortune guards him?

A generous man: when distant exile flings

A suppliant to him, the suppliant is steeped in bounty.

When hands grow black with a stinginess that shames them,

How many a white hand Musa has bestowed!
