ضَريحtomb بِنتيmy daughter جَعَلتُI made بَيتيmy home
وَقُلتُand I said لَيتيwould that I أَموتُI might die لَيتيwould that I
I made my daughter's tomb my home,
I made my home your tomb, my daughter
And said, 'Would that I might die—would that I might!'
And said, “Would that I had died, would that I had!”
قدومُthe return حَيٍّa living person يَغيبُis absent يُرجَىis hoped for
وَلَيسَand is not يُرجىhoped for قُدومُthe return مَيتِa dead person
The return of the living who are absent is hoped for,
The coming of the living brings hope though absent
But the return of the dead is not hoped for.
While the coming of the dead is not hoped for
ياO عَينُeye ابكيweep دَماًblood عَلَيهاfor her
فَلَيسَfor no يَجريflows دَمعٌtears بَكَيتِyou wept
O eye, weep blood for her,
Oh eyes, weep blood for her
For no tears flow when you weep.
For no tears you cry will flow
ياO لَيلَةَnight of البَينِparting مِنfrom نُضارٍNudar
صَدَّعتِyou shattered قَلبيmy heart بِماwith what جَنَيتِyou wrought
O night of parting from Nudar,
O night of separation, with your blossoms
You shattered my heart with what you wrought.
You have rent my heart with all you have harvested
Nudar
طِبتِyou became sweet شَذاًin fragrance بِالَّذيwith the one حَوَيتِyou enclosed
O earth that has enclosed Nudar,
O earth that now covers blossoms
You are sweetly fragrant with the one you hold.
You are sweetly scented with what you have enveloped
وَعَيتِyou contained عَقلاًintellect وَبَحرَand an ocean of عِلمٍknowledge
وسُؤدداًand nobility بِالَّتيin her whom وَعَيتِyou contained
You embraced intellect and an ocean of knowledge,
You were home to a mind and ocean of knowledge
And nobility, in her whom you embraced.
And agony through what you have kept
Nudar
وَصِرتُand I became مُضنىًwasted لَمّاwhen مَضَيتِyou departed
Sorrow has tormented me, O Nudar,
Grief has destroyed me, O Nadhar
And I grew wasted when you departed.
And I am anguished since you left
أَصبَحتُI became فَرداًalone فَلَيتَso, if only أَنِّيthat I
قَضَيتُI met نَحباًdeath لَمّاwhen قَضَيتِyou died
I am left alone; if only I
Alone I have become—would that
Had met death when you met yours.
I had met my end when you met yours
سَعَيتِyou strove لِلعلمِfor knowledge باجتهادٍwith diligence
وَلَمand not تُمتَّعيbe granted enjoyment بِماof what وَعَيتِyou learned
You strove for knowledge with diligence,
You strove for knowledge studiously
Yet you were not granted enjoyment of what you learned.
But could not enjoy what you learned
سَرَتit journeyed by night إِلىto عالمٍa realm عَلِيٍّlofty
روحُكِyour soul ياoh بُعدthe distance ماthat سَرَيتِyou journeyed by night
By night, to a lofty realm journeyed
Your soul journeyed, O distant one, after you went
Your soul—oh, how far you journeyed!
To a sublime world
إِلىto سَماءِthe heaven of الَّذيthe One تَسامَتit soared
حَتّىuntil رَأَيتِyou saw الَّذيwhat رَأَيتِyou saw
To the heaven of the One it soared,
Until you saw what you saw
Until you saw what you saw.
Ascending to the heaven of He who is most high
الروحُthe soul مِنكِfrom you اِستحالَturned into طَيراًa bird
لَمّاwhen تَشَكّىit complained of الظَماthirst سَقَيتِyou gave drink
Your soul turned into a bird;
Your soul became a bird
When it complained of thirst, you gave it drink.
When the thirsty vines were watered
وَآخِرُand the last النُطقِutterance كانَwas مِنكِfrom you التthe (word continues)

تَشَهُّدُtestimony of faith اللذwhich بِهِin it رَبَيتِyou grew up
And your last utterance was the
And your last words were declarations
Testimony of faith in which you grew up.
Of the faith in which you were raised
وَقَدَّسَand may He sanctify اللَهGod مِنكِof yours روحاًa soul
نالَتit attained مِنof الخُلدِeternal life ماwhat اشتَهَيتِyou desired
And may God sanctify your soul,
God sanctified a soul from you
Which gained in eternity what you desired.
That attained the eternity it desired
وَإِنَّand indeed بَيتاًa house أَضحىhas become مَحَلاًan abode
لِخَيرِfor the best بِنتٍdaughter لَخَيرُsurely the best بَيتِhouse
And a home that has become the dwelling
A house has become the abode
Of the best of daughters is surely the best of homes.
Of the best daughter of the best home
