لَمnot أُؤَخِّرI delay عَمّنfrom the one whom أُحبُّI love كِتابيmy letter
لَم أُؤَخِّر عَمّن أُحبُّ كِتابي
لِقلىًout of aversion فيهِtoward him أَوor لتركِto abandon هَواهُlove for him
لِقلىً فيهِ أَو لتركِ هَواهُ
I did not delay sending my letter to the one I love
I did not put off for one I love my writing,
out of aversion to him, or to abandon my love for him.
Whether due to lack of inspiration or ceasing of passion,
غَيرَbut أَنيthat I إِذاwhenever كتبتُI write كِتاباًa letter
غَيرَ أَني إِذا كتبتُ كِتاباً
غلبَoverwhelmed الدَمعُthe tears مُقلتيmy eye فَمَحاهُand so erased it
غلبَ الدَمعُ مُقلتي فَمَحاهُ
But whenever I write a letter,
Save that when I wrote a book,
tears overwhelm my eye and blot the letter out.
My tears overcame my pen and wiped it away.
