قلّدتُI adorned طرسيmy parchment مِنfrom حُلاكَyour graces جَواهِراjewels
فَغَداso it became وَمَنظَرُهُand its appearance البَهيمُdark بَهِيُّradiant
I adorned my parchment with jewels from your graces,
I adorned my neck with pearls from your cheeks,
And its dark face became radiant.
So it became beautifully radiant.
درَرٌpearls تَوَدُّwish الغيدُgraceful maidens مِنout of شَغَفٍpassion بِهاfor them
لَوif only كانَthere were مِنهاfrom them للنُحورِfor the throats حُلِيُّornaments
Pearls that graceful maidens, enamored of them, wish
Gems that the clouds would yearn for passionately,
Could be made into ornaments for their throats.
Had they been necklaces for throats.
أَبهَتنَthey dumbfounded لَماwhen لُحنَthey appeared كُلَّevery مُفَوَّهٍeloquent speaker
فَالطَرفُso the eye مُعيٍbaffled وَاللِسانُand the tongue عَيِيُّtongue-tied
When they appeared, they struck every eloquent speaker dumb;
They dazzled all who spoke ineloquently,
So the eye is baffled, and the tongue is tongue-tied.
So eyes were dazzled and tongues fell silent.
لِلِّهِto God (in admiration) مِنهاamong them مُذهباتٍgolden verses شُرَّدٍfar-famed
للتاجِto the Crown يَنمىis traced دُرُّهاtheir pearls الصدفِيُّoyster-born
How wondrous these golden, far-famed verses,
From them Allah created jewels, scattered,
Whose oyster-born pearls are traced to the Crown.
From shells grows the pearl for crowns.
