    How beautifully my beloved reads my poetry,

    Love verse about him, while a listener is unaware.

    لاقى دُرَراً مُستخرجا مِن بَحرِ

    My moon knows that it contains pearls;

    He found pearls, drawing them from a sea.

    A sea fed by an intelligence so fashioned

    That I surely thought his mind was made of embers.

    Blazing embers that coursed through veils

    Of the cheek; I fancy his embers do not spread.

    They spread to a grieving man whose heart is aflame,

    Already melted with grief for one dwelling in the palace.

    A palace for a gazelle-fawn, as though his visage

    Were from the forenoon sun, or his face from a full moon.

    يَهتَزُّ نَقاً مِن تَحتِ غُصنٍ نَضرِ

    A full moon, and above him rose a canopy of hair;

    A sand dune sways beneath a verdant bough.

    Verdant, and it complained of his rump, of a weight

    Within it, as though his rump were made of rock.

    Rock, like the heart of the one we loved with passion

    For him—because of him my patience has indeed perished.

    Patience is bitter aloes; when aloes is administered

    To an ailing body, then on to the grave!
