He thrilled at lightning over the Ḥimā that flickered,
He fluttered at lightning that had flashed in the sanctuary,
and his secrets have not stayed hidden since it vanished.
And his secrets have not been concealed since he vanished.

سَكرانُ لَكن مِن لمى أَهيَفا
Jealous even of the morning breeze,
Jealous even of the breeze of the east wind,
drunk—but on the dusky lips of a slender-waisted beauty.
Drunk, but on the dark lips of a slender beloved.

Like the sun—yet his face,
Like the sun, yet his face alone,
for the sheer beauty within it, will never be eclipsed.
For its surpassing beauty, will never be eclipsed.

His eye played the drunken reveler, though he does not
His gaze ran riot, although he does not
drink wine—his faith forbid it!
Drink wine—far be that from his faith.

But the fragrance of his saliva traveled
But the fragrance of his saliva has passed
from him to an eye that mimicked a sharpened blade.
From him to a gaze resembling a sharpened blade.

I sickened from the sickness in his eyelids;
I fell ill from the sickness in his eyelids;
a lovesick invalid has never ceased infecting another.
One wasted by sickness keeps infecting another.

A dusky beauty brandished before us a slender brown lance,
A brown-skinned man has brandished a brown spear for us,
tempered by the fire of his cheek.
Which he has straightened with the fire of his cheek.

Its top has borne a crescent moon as fruit, and it has
almost snapped beneath the weight of his haunches.
Almost snapped beneath the weight of his buttocks.
