I see that every heretic, when he seeks to spread what

he has concealed, claims to have become righteous among men.

So he uses the ignorant, plundering their wealth,

and offers them a disgraceful lie against God.

Qarmatians, impostors, the root of error—

dogs that have taken to barking against Islam.

Oh, for a lion whose roar strikes the dogs dead,

who would sweep them away with an Indian sword.

Oh, for one who stands for God, a champion of His faith,

seen shedding the blood of the Batinis.

They have distorted the Qur'an as one who disbelieves

in it, and made shameful claims about it among themselves.

Each of them declares before the multitudes,

having made the ignorant believe he has become a sincere adviser,

that God's friend is whoever is sinful,

    and whoever is far removed from the faith of the sacred Law;

and that the Jews, the Christians, and their like

    are in the right, each one's conduct being sound;

and a worshipper of idols, a worshipper of a star,

    and a worshipper of fire have come to incline toward the truth;

and that the exegesis of Ali and Ibn Abbas has become,

    in his eyes, discarded rubbish, nonsense soaring with the wind;

and that there is no eating in the Gardens, no drinking, only

spiritual insights bestowed upon the saint as gifts.

Ah, who will vindicate me against petty men posing as sheikhs?

For each now throws open the gate of unbelief.

    Destitute heretics, he-goats turned Qarmatians,

with eyes now straining toward unbelief.

They said, “Ours is divinely bestowed knowledge, while your learning

is husks, now gone with the winds.

It is not from your instruction or your cooking pots,

but has come as an illumination arising from the cosmos.”

They have denied the Qur'an and the traditions that

came from the Chosen One through sound transmission.

They said, “God's Messenger did not die; instead he now

goes about among the dead, visiting the tombs.

Likewise, when you say 'Peace be upon you' in

prayer, he appears to you, present and visible.”

They have interpreted the Qur'an from the brains in their own heads,

muddles of unbelief laid bare as scandals.

O judges of the Muslims, take heed! Rise up

to kill a hardened unbeliever who has come to assail the faith.

I can almost see the exalted judge, having learned

of them, whereupon they lie slaughtered upon the earth.

And bodies are dragged, and heads paraded

on the point of a spear thrust against the heretics.

Foraging birds smell the stench of their flesh,

so they draw away, even though they are famished birds of prey.

And their souls are carried from their resting-place

to the Fire, where they abide forever, grimacing.

Indeed, Jalal al-Din, our chief judge,

has raised the Law's beacon, and it shines forth clearly.

He rose to defend the faith, the faith of Muhammad,

and quenched an evil that scorched like fire,

at a time when no one rose in its defense

except him; thus he prospered, richly rewarded.

The evil of his belief has indeed overtaken al-Labban,

and he stood in humiliation, disgraced and scowling.

He confessed unbelief, then displayed repentance,

for fear of a sword, lest he see his soul depart.

No heretic has repented; yet accepting repen-

tance is the judge's doctrine, so he leniently spared him.

And he said, “Whenever he returns to unbelief, I shall slay him

with the edge of a keen sword that sends the head tumbling.”

So may Jalal al-Din ever remain a defender of the faith,

a disseminator of learning and a bestower of bounty.
