رَمانيpelted me الزَّمانُtime بِأَحداثِهِwith its calamities
وَكُنتُand I was صَبوراًpatient عَلىin the face of ماwhat حَدَثhappened
Time has assailed me with its vicissitudes,
Time pelted me with its calamities,
and I was patient with whatever befell.
And I was patient with whatever befell.
وَأَفنىand consumed الشَبابَyouth وَأَهلاًand kin مَضَواpassed away
وَماand not كُنتُI was مِمَّنamong those who بِذاكَabout that اكتَرَثwere troubled
It consumed my youth, and loved ones who passed away,
It consumed my youth and kin now gone,
yet I was not one to be troubled by that.
Yet I was not one to be troubled by that.
وَمُنذُand since عَياexhausted بَصَريmy eyesight ضَعفُهُits weakness
قَعَدتُI sat كَأَنّيas though I were رَهينُa captive of الجَدَثthe grave
But since its weakness left my sight helpless,
But since weakness overcame my sight,
I have sat as though a prisoner of the grave.
I have sat as though a captive of the grave.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was مُستأنِساًat ease ساكِناًcalm
فقَدso now صرتُI have become مُستَوحِشاًlonely ذاfull of عَبثrestless activity
I once was companionably at ease and settled;
Once I was at ease and calm;
now I have grown lonely, prey to futile restlessness.
Now I have become lonely and restless.
إِذاwhenever رُمتُI try انظرto look فيat مُهرَقٍa written page
تَغَشّىveils سَناthe radiance of ناظِريَّmy two eyes الشَعَثdisorder
When I seek to look upon a page,
Whenever I try to look at a written page,
bleary disorder veils the radiance of my eyes.
Disorder veils the light of my eyes.
وَإِنand if أَناI أَبعَثُrouse ذهنيmy mind لَهُto it
لِفكرٍfor reflection أراهُI find it إِذنthen ماnot انبَعَثstirred
And if I direct my mind toward it,
And if I summon my mind to it
toward a thought I discern, it then will not stir.
To ponder, I find then that it has not stirred.
وَمَنand whoever كانَis فيin العلمِknowledge ذاpossessed of شِبَعٍsatiety
فَإِنيfor I إِلىfor فَقرِهِhis poverty ذوpossessed of غَرَثhunger
As for anyone sated with learning,
And whoever has his fill of knowledge—
I remain hungry even for his paucity.
I hunger even for his poverty.
يَزينُadorns الفَتىthe young man عِلمُهُhis knowledge مِثلَماjust as
يزينُadorns الفَتاةَthe young woman الحُلىjewelry وَالرُعُثand earrings
A young man is adorned by his knowledge, just as
A young man's knowledge adorns him, just as
a young woman is adorned by jewelry and earrings.
Jewelry and earrings adorn a young woman.
وَإِنand although كانَis قَلبيmy heart قَريحاًwounded فَليyet I have
لِسانٌa tongue بِحَمدِin praise of إلَهيmy God نَفَثbreathed forth
And though my heart is wounded, I still have
And though my heart is wounded, I have
a tongue that breathes forth praise of my God.
A tongue that has breathed forth my God's praise.
