فَقَدfor indeed قَدَحَتhas flared فيin القَلبِthe heart نارُfire زِنادِfire-striking flints
I say to my companions: Is there no cold water?
For flint-struck fire has flared within my heart.
فَجاءُواso they came بكُوزٍwith a pitcher أَحمَرِred اللَونِin color قانيءٍdeep crimson
وَحافاتُهُand its rims مَطلِيَّةٌpainted بِسَوادِwith black
So they brought a pitcher, deep crimson in color,
And its rims were painted black.
فَقُلتُso I said عُيونُeyes الكوزِof the pitcher سُودٌblack لذكرةas a reminder of
عُيونeyes حَبيبٍof a beloved باخلٍstingy بِمِدادِwith ink
So I said: The pitcher's eyes are black, a reminder
Of the eyes of a beloved who begrudges ink.

And its color only resembles the redness
On the cheek of a lord who holds the reins.

Oh, what a wonder! This lifeless thing stirs
Love's lingering trace in the heart of one love-maddened and thirsty.

I find that whenever I look at anything, I discover in it
Likenesses of beauty manifest in the beloved.

دَوامُcontinuance of سهادٍsleeplessness وَالتزامُand clinging to وَسادِa pillow
My heart delights in what its beloved desires:
Endless sleeplessness and clinging to a pillow,
وَتركُand forsaking غِذاءٍfood غَيرَother than ذكرىremembrance of حَبيبةa beloved woman
فَذاكَfor that إِلىuntil أُخراهits ultimate end فَضلَةُa surplus زادِof provisions
And forsaking food except remembrance of a beloved woman—
For that is sustenance to spare until the very end.
