فيin اِحمرارredness يَنشَقُّsplits open مِنهُfrom it الشَقيقthe anemone
في اِحمرار يَنشَقُّ مِنهُ الشَقيق
A full moon, with a beauty mark upon his cheek,
A full moon, with a mole upon his cheek,
amid a flush from which the red anemone blooms.

كتبinscribed الحُسنbeauty بِالمحققin muḥaqqaq script مَعناmeaning; essence
كتب الحُسن بِالمحقق مَعنا
هُhis وَلَكنand yet عِذارَهhis cheek-down تَعليقُtaʿlīq script
هُ وَلَكن عِذارَه تَعليقُ
Beauty wrote, by erasure, a meaning—
Beauty inscribed his essence in muḥaqqaq script,
he is that meaning; yet his facial hair is a marginal annotation.
but his cheek-down is taʿlīq.
