Time assailed me with its calamities,

And I was patient with all that befell.

And it swept away youth and loved ones now gone,

Yet I was not one to be troubled by that.

And since my sight succumbed to weakness,

I have sat as though a captive of the grave.

    فقَد صرتُ مُستَوحِشاً ذا عَبث

    And once I was at ease and calm;

Now I have become forlorn and restless.

Whenever I try to read a parchment,

A blur veils the radiance of my eyes.

And if I summon my mind to it,

To ponder, I then find it has not stirred.

Though others may be sated with knowledge,

I hunger even for their poverty in it.

A young man's knowledge adorns him, just as

Jewelry and earrings adorn a young woman.

And though my heart is wounded, I have

A tongue that breathes forth praise of my God.
