    بَل عِناقٌ مُواصَلٌ وَالتزامُ

    This greeting is no greeting for those who have been away;

Rather, an unbroken embrace and a close clasp,

And lips striking together in kisses, until

Kissing heals the lovesick lover of his thirst.

Do you think words can heal wounds?

A beloved's words do not heal wounds.

If you have shunned a kiss and an embrace,

Then you have indeed shunned what the noble permit.

O you who have resolved on pilgrimage, wait!

You are the goal of pilgrimage for one whom sickness has wasted.

He has become a consecrated pilgrim, answering the call of beauty

From you; when it called him, his passion grew.

Pale in complexion, sunken-eyed from the way

Love has worn him thin—distraught, love-crazed.

Setting thought to work in the trackless deserts of longing,

On mounts that ardent love spurs onward.

Journeying toward your Mecca of beauty,

So he reached it, its landmarks already in view.

In your face the Kaaba of beauty is unveiled,

    So humankind circles it forever.

Every corner of it is a Yemeni corner of blessing,

So each of them receives the ritual touch.

Their time has grown serene through the striving of souls

For your sanctuary; they stood at Arafat and remained steadfast.

And their wish is to have cast embers

At your Mina, where a blaze kindles them.

Do not fear thirst that deceives, nor worry about sustenance

In a place where dwelling is delightful.

For eyes are like Zamzam, if you come to drink,

And hearts in which you have a lodging.

And, as they streamed toward you, they poured out

Tears, all of them fine, freely flowing rain.

They made souls flourish with genuine affection

From their love, so no blame falls on them.

    فَعَلى الوَصلِ وَالحَياةِ السَلامُ

    And the farewell circumambulation dooms them;

So farewell to union and to life.

Do you think they will one day visit a dead man

Whom they meant to forsake, so death grew stronger?
