Indeed, they marveled at pearls scattered wide—
Indeed, they marveled at scattered pearls,
pearls of the loftiest words, single and twinned.
Of the loftiest words, singly and in pairs.

Nor is it strange: the pearls with which my shaykh had filled
And it is no wonder that pearls, with which
my hearing spilled, scattering, out of my mouth.
My teacher had filled my ear, should scatter from a mouth.

Between the human mouth and hearing lies a kinship.
There is a kinship between the human mouth and hearing:
Have you not seen that hearing is the gateway to speech?
Have you not seen that hearing is the gateway to speech?
