وَعاشَAnd lived بِدَعوىby claiming العِلمِknowledge ناسٌsome people وَماyet not لَهُمfor them
وَعاشَ بِدَعوى العِلمِ ناسٌ وَما لَهُم
مِنof العلمِknowledge حَظٌّa share لاneither بِعَقلٍthrough reason وَلاnor نَقلِtransmitted knowledge
مِن العلمِ حَظٌّ لا بِعَقلٍ وَلا نَقلِ
And some people have lived by claiming knowledge, though they have
no share of knowledge, whether reasoned or transmitted.
فَياSo, O عَجَباًwonder للحَبرِat the scholar يَحرمis denied رزقهhis livelihood
فَيا عَجَباً للحَبرِ يَحرم رزقه
بعلمbecause of learning وَللأغمارand at the ignorant ترزقare sustained بِالجهلِthrough ignorance
بعلم وَللأغمار ترزق بِالجهلِ
So how strange that the scholar is denied his livelihood
for his learning, while the ignorant are sustained by ignorance!
