    If people disagree over a matter,

    And it admits only two opposing views,

    وَفكرٍ لتبصِرَهُ غَير خاف

    Then the truth in it is but one;

    And reflect, so you may see it plainly.

    بِقَولينِ مِن نظرٍ غَيرِ شاف

    And if it admits several views, they voice

    Two opinions, based on inconclusive reasoning;

    Then the truth may emerge in a third,

    And their allegiance springs from dotage.

    And do not give weight to the number of speakers,

    For they are donkeys without pack-saddles.

    Some of them contradict others,

    So their speech is ever discordant.

    And had they reflected deeply, they would have judged fairly,

    And their speech would have been harmonious.

    And beware of debating with a novice,

    A dullard who speaks without fairness.
